Debra is a faithful volunteer at The Bryan Museum. She and her husband enjoy traveling, but Debra always makes time to come to The Bryan. What we love the most about Debra is the way she seamlessly and intuitively assists where help is needed. She has even recently begun to assist in the training of new volunteers to give trainees an experienced perspective. Debra helps guests explore the Museum. She is also a great source of information about the Galveston area, island events, and restaurants. If you are lucky enough to find Debra around the Museum, be sure to thank her for her time and dedication.
We asked Debra a few questions about her time at the Museum:
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I started as a part-time beach house owner in Galveston in 1994. I fell in love with Galveston and all its activities and eventually moved into a historic home in town. My husband and I worked in the space program most of our careers, commuting off the island to the Johnson Space Center. Now that we are retired, we enjoy traveling, volunteering in several organizations, and spending time with family.
What enticed you to become a volunteer at The Bryan Museum?
Living in the neighborhood, I watched the restoration in anticipation and was thrilled to have the Museum come to Galveston! A friend told me they were looking for volunteers, and I wanted to support this new community treasure.
What is your favorite part of being a Bryan Museum volunteer?
I most enjoy meeting all of our guests and want to make sure their visit is enjoyable so they will want to come back.
What is your favorite thing about the Museum?
As I am not a Texan by birth, I've enjoyed learning from this collection and the staff who are so knowledgeable and personable.
